How to Identify Your Grass Type (With Photos)
Quick Answer
Three questions, in order. When does it go brown? That splits cool-season from warm-season and halves the field immediately. How does it spread? Surface runners, underground stems, or neither. What does one blade look like? Width, tip shape, and whether the underside is glossy. Most lawns are identified before question three.
Browns in WINTER → warm-season
- Fully dormant and straw-brown after frost
- Green-up in late April or May
- Bermuda · Zoysia · St. Augustine · Centipede
- Mown low — 1 to 2 in — except St. Augustine
Browns in SUMMER → cool-season
- Green through winter, dormant in summer heat and drought
- Strongest growth in spring and autumn
- Tall fescue · Kentucky bluegrass · Perennial ryegrass · Fine fescue
- Mown high — 2.5 to 4 in
That first question does more work than any leaf-blade detail, because it is answered by something you have already observed without trying. Everything below refines it.
Question 1: When Does It Turn Brown?

Warm-season grasses go fully dormant with cold and turn straw-brown until green-up, which typically arrives in late April or early May and can be several weeks later inland than on the coast. It is normal for them to green up and be burnt back repeatedly by late frosts.
Cool-season grasses do the opposite. They hold colour through winter and go dormant in summer heat and drought — Kentucky bluegrass can sit dormant for four to six weeks and recover. A brown lawn in July in the north is usually a dormant lawn, not a dead one.
If you are in the transition zone, expect ambiguity
Question 2: How Does It Spread?
Get down at ground level and look at how the plants connect. This is the most reliable structural test and it works even on a dormant lawn.

Question 3: What Does a Single Blade Look Like?
Pull one blade and look at it properly. Three features do nearly all the work.
Tip shape
- Boat-shaped — narrowing and curving like a canoe prow. Kentucky bluegrass, and it is diagnostic.
- Pointed — tall fescue and perennial ryegrass.
- Rounded and blunt — St. Augustine.
Width and texture
- Very broad and flat — St. Augustine. Nothing else is close.
- Coarse with prominent parallel veins — tall fescue.
- Fine and soft — Kentucky bluegrass.
- Very fine, almost needle-like — fine fescue, usually in shade.
- Thin and stiff, almost bristly — zoysia. Texture varies but stiffness does not.
- Fine and pliable, low mat — bermudagrass.
The glossy test
Turn the blade over. Perennial ryegrass has a distinctly glossy, almost waxy underside that catches light in a way the others do not. It is the quickest way to spot ryegrass in a mixed cool-season lawn, where it often appears as slightly darker, glossier patches.

Fast route for most lawns
- Broad flat blades and thick surface runners in the south → St. Augustine.
- Fine low turf that invades your beds → bermudagrass.
- Stiff, dense, hard on your mower blade → zoysia.
- Visible tufts and coarse veined blades → tall fescue.
- Fine soft carpet with boat-shaped tips → Kentucky bluegrass.
- Glossy on the underside → perennial ryegrass, usually as part of a mix.
Why the Answer Changes What You Do
This is not an academic exercise. Almost every maintenance decision depends on the answer, and several of them differ by a factor of three or four between species.

Acting on What You Found
If the three questions produced a confident answer, go to that species guide and set your mowing height first — it is the decision with the largest effect and the one most often wrong.
If you are still torn between two candidates, the practical news is that it often does not matter much. Tall fescue and perennial ryegrass share mowing heights and feeding windows; bermudagrass and zoysia share a fertility calendar almost exactly. Where it does matter is across the cool-season and warm-season divide, and question one settles that reliably.
If you genuinely cannot tell, your county extension office will identify a sample — often free. Take a plug rather than loose blades, so they can see the growth habit as well as the leaf.
