How We Evaluate Products

What We Check

Every review is built from four sources, in this order. None of them is a manufacturer’s marketing copy.

• Manufacturer specifications. Pulled from the technical documentation rather than the product page, because the two frequently disagree — cutting height ranges and cut capacities in particular.
• Independent testing and teardowns. Where credible third-party testing exists, we read it and say so.
• Owner feedback, synthesised. We read across owner reports looking for patterns — the same failure appearing repeatedly is worth more than any single review. We never reproduce customer reviews verbatim.
• University extension guidance. For anything where correct use is established by research — mowing heights, nitrogen rates, application timing, aeration method — we defer to extension publications rather than to the product label.

What Decides a Recommendation

Fit, not score. Most lawn equipment decisions are settled by yard size, slope, grass species and whether you already own a battery platform, long before brand enters it. A review that does not say who should not buy something is not finished, and every roundup names the situation each pick is wrong for.

We also say when the answer is to spend less or buy nothing. Several of our category guides recommend a hand tool over a powered one, or renting over owning, and one of them concludes that the product most people are searching for is rarely worth applying at all.

What We Will Not Publish

• Prices. Not a figure, not a range. Prices change constantly and a stale number is worse than none, so products link to Amazon where the current price is shown.
• Spec sheets without analysis. A page that lists specifications and adds nothing is not a review, and we do not ship them.
• Paid placements. No manufacturer has ever paid to appear here, to rank higher, or to see a review before publication. If that ever changes it will be disclosed on the page itself, not in a footer.
• Copied customer reviews. Owner feedback is read and summarised in our own words.

Corrections and Updates

Specifications change between model years and products get discontinued. Reviews carry the date they were last checked, and we re-verify the top pages on a regular cycle. If you find something wrong, tell us — corrections are made in the article rather than quietly.
