St. Augustine is the grass people reach for when bermudagrass has thinned out under trees. That is the right instinct, but it comes with a specific set of problems that do not apply to the other warm-season options.

St. Augustinegrass is generally considered the most shade-tolerant of the warm-season turfgrasses. That is a real advantage over bermudagrass, which thins badly anywhere light is limited. But the qualifier matters: it still requires a daily minimum of 4 to 6 hours of light to survive.
Below that, you are not choosing the wrong grass — you are choosing grass when the site cannot support any. Under dense mature trees the honest answers are shade-tolerant ground cover, mulch, or accepting bare ground, and extension guidance consistently reaches the same conclusion for sites that cannot support vigorous turf.
Identifying It
The easiest identification in lawn care. Blades are coarse, broad and flat with a rounded tip— visibly wider than anything else commonly grown as turf. It spreads by thick above-ground stolons that run across the soil surface and can be lifted and traced by hand, without the underground rhizomes bermudagrass also uses.
That stolon-only habit produces a characteristically spongy, layered turf that builds thatch readily, and it is why the grass sits noticeably higher off the soil than bermuda or zoysia.

Fertility — and the Trap

This is the single most useful thing to understand about St. Augustinegrass. The lawn thins under trees, the owner assumes it needs feeding, applies nitrogen, and creates exactly the conditions the disease wants. Shade plus damp plus nitrogen is the full recipe.
Diagnose before you feed. If thinning is in a shaded damp area during hot humid weather, suspect gray leaf spot rather than a nutrient deficiency, and address airflow, irrigation timing and mowing height before reaching for fertilizer.
The fertility window for St. Augustine, as for all warm-season grasses, runs May through August. Frequency depends on soil texture: expect to fertilize monthly through the growing season on sandy soils, and every six weeks on clay soils, because sand does not hold nutrients.

Chinch Bugs: The Defining Pest
Clemson is unambiguous: the greatest disadvantage of St. Augustinegrass is its sensitivity to the chinch bug, which can cause extensive damage if not controlled early. Two words in that sentence carry the weight — extensive and early.
- Where to look. Chinch bugs favour hot, dry, sunny areas, so damage typically starts in the most exposed part of the lawn and spreads outward.
- What it looks like. Irregular yellowing patches that turn straw-coloured and keep expanding despite watering — the failure to respond to irrigation is the tell that separates it from drought stress.
- Why early matters. St. Augustine cannot be reseeded. Damaged areas must be plugged or sodded, so letting an infestation run is expensive in a way it would not be on a seeded lawn.

Repairs cost more too
A bare patch cannot be reseeded. It must be plugged or sodded, which is why early intervention on chinch bugs and disease matters more here than on grasses where a bag of seed fixes the consequences. Plant repairs in the warm season so the grass has time to knit before dormancy.

Is This Grass Right for Your Lawn?
Choose St. Augustine for a southern lawn with genuine partial shade, where bermudagrass has already thinned and where the site still gets four to six hours of light. It is the best warm-season answer to that specific problem, and no amount of care makes bermuda a shade grass.
Choose against it at the cold edge of the warm-season range, on lawns taking heavy wear, or where you are not prepared to scout for chinch bugs. And be honest about the light — below four hours, the answer is not a different grass but a different plant.
For full sun with heavy traffic, bermudagrass is the stronger choice. For partial shade with lower input and no chinch bug exposure, zoysiais worth comparing — it handles part shade too, at the cost of much slower establishment.
