Mowing Height: The Spec Most Often Got Wrong

Height is the setting with the largest effect on how a lawn looks and the one most commonly applied from habit rather than from the species. The usable range across common lawn grasses runs from half an inch to four inches — an eightfold spread, and mowers are usually left wherever they were last set.

Two practical notes sit behind the numbers. Clemson raises tall fescue and fine fescue in summer and drops them again in winter, so a single figure was never the intent. And the one-third rule applies throughout — removing more than a third of the blade in one pass stresses roots regardless of the height you are aiming for.
Annual Nitrogen: The Number That Sets Your Bill
Nitrogen requirement is the closest thing to a running cost, and it varies more than any other specification. Ohio State splits cool-season grasses into low and high maintenance rather than giving one figure, which is the honest way to present it — the same grass can be run at either end depending on what you want from it.

Read across the extremes and centipedegrass at half a pound sits roughly ten times below bermudagrass at five. That single comparison explains most of the disappointment people report with centipede lawns: fed on a bermudagrass schedule, centipedegrass declines rather than improves. Self-Repair: The Difference With No Middle Ground
Whether a grass fills its own bare patches is binary, and it is decided by anatomy. Grasses with rhizomes, stolons or both spread laterally into damage. Bunch grasses grow only upward from a crown, so a patch stays open until seed goes into it.

This is the trade behind the fertiliser figures above. Kentucky bluegrass repairs itself and costs roughly twice the nitrogen of tall fescue; tall fescue runs cheap and never recovers a patch. Establishment: Days, Weeks, or Years
Establishment speed sets how long a new lawn stays vulnerable, and the range is far wider than the seed bags suggest.

Zoysia is the outlier worth pausing on. Penn State’s three-to-six-year figure is for a solid stand from plugs, and it is the single most under-communicated number in lawn selection — people plug a zoysia lawn expecting a season and get a decade’s worth of patience tested. Sod removes the wait and most of the cost advantage with it.
Seeding rates differ as much as germination does. Ohio State puts tall fescue at 6 to 8 lb per 1,000 sq ft sown at 100 percent, while a bluegrass and ryegrass mix goes down at 2 to 3 lb — a third of the weight for the same area. One line from Clemson is worth more than the whole grid: all turfgrasses grow best in full sun, and even the shade-tolerant species need four to six hours of direct light a day. Below that, species selection stops being the answer and the honest options are thinning the canopy above or planting something other than grass.
Where the Charts Disagree — and Why That Matters

The zoysia split is the clearest example, but it is not the only one. Ohio State puts Kentucky bluegrass at 2.5 to 3 inches while Penn State gives 1.5 to 2.5 — two neighbouring states, a full inch apart. Clemson runs tall fescue lower in winter and higher in summer, so any single number for it is a seasonal average that describes no actual month.
This is why national comparison charts should be treated as a shortlist rather than an instruction. They are reliable for the things that do not move — growth habit, self-repair, establishment method, the broad shape of nitrogen demand. They are least reliable exactly where people lean hardest on them: shade ratings and precise mowing heights.

Which One Is Right for You
Work it in this order. Your climate eliminates roughly half the chart before anything else — settle that with the climate guide. Then apply the site: hours of direct sun, how hard the lawn gets used, whether irrigation is available. That usually leaves two candidates.
Between the final two, the deciding question is almost always self-repair against input. If the lawn takes real traffic and you would rather not overseed every autumn, pay the nitrogen for a spreading grass. If the lawn is ornamental and the budget matters more than a perfect surface, a bunch grass at half the fertility is the better trade.
