Tall Fescue Guide: The Drought-Tolerant Workhorse Grass

Turf-type tall fescue asks less of you than any other common cool-season grass. It survives drought without irrigation, tolerates compaction and low fertility, and forms no thatch. The trade-off is that it cannot repair itself — it grows in clumps, so bare patches stay bare until you overseed them.

Identifying Tall Fescue

Coarser than bluegrass or fine fescue, with wide blades carrying prominent parallel veins and a slightly rough leaf edge. It grows in distinct clumps rather than knitting into a uniform carpet, which is the easiest field identification — look at whether the lawn is one continuous sward or many tufts sitting close together.

- Sun and shade. Ohio State describes it as more sun and shade tolerant than any other species used in Ohio lawns.
- Endophytes. Most turf-type cultivars carry beneficial fungi toxic to sod webworms, chinch bugs and billbugs.

The Cultivar Trap
Kentucky 31 is a pasture grass, not a lawn grass
Ohio State advises avoiding the old pasture types of tall fescue for lawns — they have no endophytes, are clump-forming and coarse in texture.
This is the single most common way people end up disappointed with tall fescue. Kentucky 31 is cheap, widely stocked, and shares a species name with the improved cultivars — but it behaves like the pasture grass it was bred to be. Improved turf-type cultivars are less coarse, grow more upright, tiller more readily and are darker green.
Read the seed label for the cultivar name and for zero percent weed seed, and choose seed labelled endophyte-enhanced. A blend of two or three turf-type cultivars is recommended over a single one.

Common Questions
Is This Grass Right for Your Lawn?
Choose it if you want a lawn that asks for less — less water, less nitrogen, no dethatching — and you are prepared to overseed occasionally rather than expecting it to heal itself. On compacted, low-fertility or drought-prone sites it will outperform Kentucky bluegrass without the input bill.
Choose something else if you need a lawn that repairs its own damage — that is Kentucky bluegrass, at the cost of roughly double the nitrogen and a thatch layer to manage — or if you want a fine, uniform texture. And whatever you decide, buy an improved turf-type cultivar rather than Kentucky 31 — that single choice matters more than anything else on this page.
