It is a different programme, with different expectations, and it is recognised as legitimate by the same extension services that publish the intensive schedules. The honest part is being clear about the trade-off rather than pretending there is not one.
The Minimum Viable Programme

Four things. Nothing else is required for an established lawn to stay healthy.

University of Minnesota Extension’s guidance recognises exactly this tier: a low-maintenance lawn that is not watered and keeps its clippings needs roughly 0.5 to 1 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft per year, in a single September application. That is the whole fertility programme.

The real cost is summer appearance, and it is worth being precise about what that means. Missouri Extension is explicit that except in extreme prolonged drought, tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass do not need water to stay alivethrough summer — their appearance suffers, but they are not dying. They cease growth, turn brown, and bounce back with cooler temperatures and moisture, usually in September.

What research shows
Density — which is what makes a lawn look good and keeps weeds out — comes mostly from mowing height, which costs nothing. A low-input lawn mown correctly frequently looks better than a heavily fertilized one mown too short. What you actually give up is uniform colour in mid-summer, not lawn quality.
One genuine caution: during summer dormancy, drought-tolerant weeds such as crabgrass, plantain and dandelion have an easier time, because they keep growing while the grass does not. A dormant lawn is more open to weed establishment than an irrigated one.
The Two Things You Must Not Skip

Skipping these two creates work rather than saving it
Mowing height and blade sharpness cost nothing and take no extra time — and getting either wrong generates jobs you will have to do later.
Cutting too short thins the lawn, exposes soil to weed seed, and shortens roots, which then makes drought stress worse. A dull blade browns the tips after every cut and slows recovery. Both create the exact problems a busy owner has no time to fix.
Everything else in a standard programme can be reduced or dropped. These two cannot, because they are not costs — they are the settings on work you are doing anyway.

Reducing the programme compresses the work. Changing the lawn itself removes it permanently, and that is the better move if you expect to be busy for years rather than weeks.

- Mulch under mature trees, where grass struggles anyway and reseeding is an annual cost.
- Groundcover in deep shade, which permanently ends a fight you were losing.
- Beds along awkward edges that slow mowing and need trimming.
- Reroute the paths people actually walk, since worn desire lines never hold grass regardless of effort.
A Realistic Time Budget

- Mulch or plant the areas where grass keeps failing. That work happens once and removes an annual cost.
