Answer a different question first: does the tool remove soil cores? Anything that only punches holes is ineffective, which eliminates most spike products sold for home use. Once you are choosing between genuine core-pulling options, it is a straightforward trade between area and effort.

Both of those work. The category that does not is the one most heavily marketed to homeowners — and it is worth dealing with that before anything else.
Cores, or It Is Not Aeration
Spike and tine aerators do not work
Ohio State Extension states that methods employing tines or spikes to simply make holes without removing soil cores are ineffective.
The mechanism explains why. Compaction means soil particles pressed too closely together. Driving a solid spike into that soil does not remove anything — it displaces soil sideways and downward, compressing the walls of the hole and often making the surrounding condition worse. Core aeration physically removes a plug, leaving a genuine void that air, water and roots can occupy.
This rules out spiked shoes, solid-tine rollers and most drum-style attachments regardless of how they are described. If the tool does not leave plugs lying on the surface afterwards, it did not aerate the lawn.
Do You Actually Need to Aerate?
Many home lawns never require it. Before renting anything, push a spade or a long screwdriver into moist soil. If it goes in easily, compaction is not your problem and aeration will not fix whatever is. If it resists at a couple of inches, you have your answer.

The case for hiring it out instead
Doing It Properly
- Aerate when soil is moist. Not saturated, not dry. Dry ground produces short, crumbling cores; saturated ground smears. If there has been no rain, water thoroughly a day beforehand.
- Time it to rapid growth. Early spring and early autumn are the standard windows for cool-season grass, because the turf recovers quickly from the disturbance.
- Mark irrigation heads and shallow utilities first. A core aerator will find them otherwise.
- Make multiple passes. One pass rarely reaches nine cores per square foot. Go over the lawn in two directions.
- Leave the cores. They break down within weeks, return soil and microbes to the surface and help decompose thatch.

Which One Is Right for You
If you are treating a gateway, a path line or a pet route, buy a hollow-tine fork and do it by hand this weekend. It is genuinely effective and you will use it repeatedly over the years.
If the whole lawn is compacted, rent or hire a core aerator, do it in early autumn, and overseed immediately afterwards while the holes are open. Either way, the one decision that matters was made at the start: the tool has to remove cores. Everything else is logistics.
