One question settles most of this category: does the method remove a core of soil, or does it just push a hole into the ground? Extension research is consistently blunt that spike and shoe methods, which compress soil sideways rather than removing it, do little for compaction and can make it worse.
Dethatching is the related but separate job, and it is needed less often than it is sold. Thatch only warrants intervention above about half an inch — below that it behaves as a useful mulch.

How to Choose an Aerator or Dethatcher
Establish first whether you need either. Compaction is testable in seconds — push a long screwdriver into moist soil, and if it resists going in, you have it. Thatch is testable by cutting a small plug and measuring the spongy layer between green growth and soil. Aerating an uncompacted lawn and dethatching a lawn with a quarter inch of thatch are both common, both stressful to the turf, and both entirely avoidable. If you do need aeration, the machine must remove cores; if you need dethatching, the depth setting matters more than the motor.
