Vinegar as a Weed Killer: What It Kills and What It Doesn’t

Vinegar occupies a strange position in lawn care: widely recommended because it is familiar, and widely misused because familiarity is doing the persuading rather than the chemistry. Both halves of that deserve unpicking.
How Acetic Acid Actually Works

Acetic acid is a non-selective contact herbicide. It has to touch foliage to do anything at all. On contact it breaks open cell walls, and the plant dies by drying out. Three consequences follow from that sentence, and they explain almost everything about the product:
- It does not damage tissue it does not touch. Missed leaves survive.
- It does not travel through the plant. There is no systemic movement to the crown or roots.
- It cannot distinguish between plants. Grass is as vulnerable as the weed.
One genuinely good property: acetic acid breaks down rapidly in the environment and leaves no residue. That is a meaningful advantage over salt-based home remedies, which accumulate in soil and can leave an area where little grows well for years.
What It Kills — and What Simply Regrows

The pattern is entirely predictable from the mechanism. Because the roots are never touched, survival depends on whether the plant had enough stored energy below ground to push new growth. Seedlings do not; established perennials do. Repeated applications can exhaust a perennial eventually, but that means repeated exposure to a concentrated acid, which raises the safety question rather than solving the weed one.
The Part the Name Hides
Every registered acetic acid herbicide carries the signal word DANGER
At 20 percent and above, acetic acid can permanently damage the cornea — including blindness — and burn skin, mouth and throat.
The National Pesticide Information Center is explicit about this. Registered acetic acid herbicides carry DANGER specifically because of the risk to eyes and skin. The vapour also matters: acetic acid readily volatilises, more so in warm weather, and breathing enough of it irritates the nose, throat and lungs. Prolonged exposure to high concentrations can cause fluid buildup in the lungs.
Wear long sleeves, long trousers, shoes, socks and gloves at minimum. For concentrate, add eye protection and chemical-resistant gloves when mixing, diluting or applying. Keep everyone else off the treated area until it is dry, and never leave it in an unlabelled container.

Why It Does Not Belong in a Lawn
Non-selective means non-selective. Spraying a weed growing inside turf burns the grass around it and leaves a bare patch — and a bare patch is precisely the condition that lets the next weed germinate. You have traded one weed for an opening in the canopy.
There is a second problem specific to lawns: acetic acid is not effective on grassy weeds. Crabgrass, goosegrass and the other annual grasses that cause most lawn frustration are poor targets for it. So in turf you get non-selective damage on the weeds it does affect, and little result on the ones you most wanted gone.

What to Use in a Lawn Instead
The one natural herbicide ingredient with genuine in-turf selectivity is iron HEDTA. Maryland Extension describes it as somewhat selective for broadleaf weeds and some grassy weeds growing among cool-season turfgrasses — which means it can be used inside a lawn without killing the lawn. Most other minimum-risk ingredients, including clove oil, citric acid and acetic acid, are post-emergent, contact and non-selective.
For scattered perennials, hand removal remains selective, immediate and free — pull when the soil is moist so the root comes with the top. Where This Fits
Vinegar earns a place in the shed for hard surfaces — the cracks, gravel and edges where anything green is unwanted and nothing desirable can be harmed. Bought as a registered product, used with eye protection, it does that job without leaving residue in the soil.
In a lawn it is the wrong instrument for a structural reason that no technique fixes: it cannot tell your grass from the weed, and it never reaches the root that regrows.
