What that sentence does not do is separate the timescales — and the separation is what actually helps.
The Weeks Clock: Nitrogen Release

Organic nitrogen is not plant-available when it leaves the bag. It is locked in proteins that soil microbes must break down — mineralization— into the ammonium and nitrate forms roots can absorb. That is a biological process, so it runs at the speed of soil temperature and moisture rather than the speed of chemistry.

The Seasons Clock: Density
Most of what an organic programme delivers arrives through turf density rather than through any product. Weed seed needs light to germinate; a thick canopy denies it. But you cannot buy density — it accumulates from correct mowing height, overseeding at the right time, adequate fertility and relieved compaction, all compounding across a growing season.
Corn gluten meal offers an unusually clear illustration of this timescale. Ohio State’s figures climb from 50–60 percent control in year one to over 90 percent by year three, and part of that gain is explicitly attributed to fewer weeds setting seed each year and to nitrogen thickening the stand. The Years Clock: Soil
Soil organic matter is the slowest and most consequential of the three. Targets sit around 4 to 6 percent, and the number moves gradually because a quarter-inch of compost spread over a lawn is a small addition relative to the volume of soil beneath it.
There is a strong practical implication in Ohio State’s guidance here: adding organic matter to soil before seedingis more effective at changing the percentage than topdressing an existing lawn. - Fewer new weeds appearing, even if existing ones are still there.
- Faster recovery after drought, heat or a weekend of heavy use.
- Earthworm activity and casts, which track soil biological health.
- Needing to mow at a steadier rate rather than in surges — a sign nitrogen is releasing evenly.
Photograph the same patch from the same position once a month. Gradual change is exactly the kind human memory handles badly, and a set of photographs will show you a difference at month eight that you genuinely cannot perceive day to day. If you are trying to build soil, you are on the years clock, and the useful question is not whether it looks better yet but whether you are doing the right things consistently.
Ohio State’s closing position on this is worth carrying: used consistently over time, natural organic methods can be expected to produce a reasonably uniform green lawn that resists adverse conditions and pests. Not a perfect one — they say plainly that perfection is unreasonable, and tolerating a few weeds is part of the approach.
